How to Store Botanical Oils: Light, Heat and Freshness

By BIO SPECTRA · 9 October 2026

Store botanical skincare oils according to the label, close the bottle after use, and avoid unnecessary exposure to heat, direct sunlight and water. The correct shelf life comes from the manufacturer's product information—not a universal rule for all natural oils.

Choose a practical storage place

A shaded cupboard away from a hot window or radiator is a sensible starting point when it matches the label directions. A beautiful display is less useful if it exposes the bottle to strong light or heat. Do not assume refrigeration is required; ask the manufacturer if the packaging does not make storage conditions clear.

Keep dispensing clean

Use clean, dry hands and avoid introducing water into the bottle. Close the cap or dispenser as directed. Keep the original packaging and label so that the ingredients, batch details and instructions remain available.

Record when you open it

A small note of the opening date can help you follow a stated period-after-opening instruction. Follow any expiry date as well. Do not invent a six-month or twelve-month limit where no such information has been provided; contact the brand with the batch number if you need clarification.

Check unexpected changes

The FDA explains that storage conditions can affect cosmetic shelf life and that products may change over time. If an oil develops an unexpected smell, appearance or texture, set it aside and ask the manufacturer before continuing. Appearance alone cannot confirm safety.

When travelling

Secure the closure, protect glass from impact and avoid leaving the bottle in a hot vehicle. Keep the product identification available. For air travel, check the airline and airport's current baggage rules rather than assuming a skincare bottle is permitted in every bag.

For treatment rooms

Keep a simple stock record with delivery dates, batch numbers and opening dates. Follow supplier guidance for stock rotation and do not top up an old container with a new batch. Professional dispensing and cleaning procedures should be agreed with the supplier.
